Sharon Kwan on Why Homeowner’s Associations are important
The Homeowner’s Associations for Design Review have served an important role in preserving the character of their communities, but have also helped to build unity and safety in our neighborhoods. I have proudly served as the Upper Rancho HOA President for over 10 years. This role has allowed me to showcase my skills in communication, collaboration and mutual respect. Many of my neighbors have called me with questions or concerns that I have been able to help them solve.
A Proud HOA Accomplishment
My greatest accomplishment has been the many occasions when I have facilitated communication between our new residents and our Architectural Review Board regarding the need for Design Review Standards that have helped us maintain our high property values. It has been essential to be able to speak both English and Mandarin or Cantonese. I am unique in that I can speak all 3 languages fluently. Communication is so important to help convey expectations and standards. I have found that new residents to Arcadia want to maintain the high quality of homes in Arcadia and are eager to learn what are the local customs and traditions.
Keeping Neighborhood Property Values High
In the Upper Rancho HOA, we have enjoyed some of the highest property values in Arcadia and the highest standards in design and architecture. Each year, I’ve hosted an annual HOA dinner where neighbors come together in a casual and jovial atmosphere allowing us to get to know one another and build community. These relationships lend itself easily to a “see something, say something” neighborhood. We watch out for one another.
Why this is important to being a leader in Arcadia
With 60% of our community identifying as Asian American, it is important to have representation on City Council that reflects this demographic and even more important to have someone who can speak to both our Caucasian community and Asian community. This helps build trust and confidence in our City leaders. Through my communication skills, I can help bridge the gap between the two demographics, making a more harmonious Arcadia.
